Brief History

Chung Hua University (CHU) was founded by a group of entrepreneurs who were ardent proponents of education in Hsinchu local areas with the mission to realize technological education, assist development of local industries and promote regional extension education. In response to government call to nurture higher professional talents for national development on the one hand, and to fulfill their grand wishes to feed back the society with whatever earned from it on the other, the entrepreneurs set up Chung Hua Polytechnic Institute, predecessor of CHU, in March 1990 before it started recruiting student in July. With joint efforts of Board of Directors, faculties, staffs and students, CHU was granted current name by Ministry of Education on August 1, 1997 due to its outstanding performance in education

Features of CHU

CHU is the first university in the country that put into effect the universal education of innovation and creation. Students are required not only to study relative courses but also to complete practical projects so that their competitiveness in prospective career may be strengthened by stimulation of creative or innovative thinking. In addition, CHU is the only higher academic institution in Hsinchu and Miaoli counties with College of Architecture and Design as well as College of Tourism. Both colleges may facilitate the development of educational programs with respect to intelligent green buildings and tourism – two of the six key industries designated by government to support for national economic growth.

Character and Moral Education

CHU emphasizes five guidelines for student to cultivate in campus to make a holistic “sunshine youth” – strong and healthy body; sound personality; enthusiastic for knowledge and wisdom; service inclination; and artistic tastes. CHU encourages volunteer services by promoting one-department-to-serve-one-neighborhood project so that concept of community care may be developed among students. In addition, CHU had invited Dr. Chien Fu, ex-president of Control Yuan, to be honorary Dean of Chung Hua Residential College. The purpose of the residential college is to cultivate civil literacy of student by combining academic activities with residential environment. It is expected that student may learn through interactions within the residential college to develop individual integrity and potentials, to serve the community and to preserve the earth.

Landscape of CHU was designed in accordance with concept of ecological sustainability. Not only the campus looks like a beautiful garden, but also possesses convenient living function facilities such as restaurants, bookstore, library, cultural center, stadium, track & field, swimming pool and recreational center. Besides, e-education is easily accessible in campus for both faculties as well as students (e.g. e-classroom, e-campus, e-portfolio, wireless network, e-books and e-databases.)

The proximity of CHU to Hinchu Science Park, Industrial Technology Research Institute and a couple of industrial parks avail it to expand cooperative programs with industries near-by. The well-connected traffic network provides easy access to and from the university

With full support of Board of Directors, and joint efforts of faculties, staffs as well as students over past years, CHU has become a comprehensive university consisting of College of Engineering, College of Management, College of Architecture and Design, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Computer Sciences and Informatics, and College of Tourism. At present, three hundred faculties (with 82% of them assistant professors and above) as well as eighty-seven hundred students either teach or study in twenty-seven departments, four BA programs, sixteen MA programs, three Ph.D. programs, and seventeen on-the-job advanced study programs.
